BBC Search for Disabled Presenters |
Established BBC schemes such as Extend and ManageAble develop the careers of off-screen talent in the media and now, ‘PresentAble’ will focus efforts on discovering and developing new presenters with disabilities. An initial online application process opened in December and closes at the end of January. Selected applicants will then be invited to screen-tests held at six UK cities – Glasgow, Cardiff, Belfast, London, Salford and Bristol. A final group of six to ten will receive bespoke training from the BBC Academy in late Spring/Summer 2012, to help them develop their on-air skills and compete for roles across the BBC’s output. Sheffield City Council Budget Consultation Events |
If you are a resident of Sheffield you should have received a letter from the Leader of the Council asking for your comments on the council’s budget cuts, the impact on services and asking for ideas for saving money. We have been asked to circulate details of Consultation Events in January if you wish to attend.
Sheffield City Council Budget Consultation |
As you know from a previous news item Sheffield City Council is reviewing its Lettings Policy, which it uses to allocate council housing, and wants to hear your views. Disabled people are facing a reduced range of housing options and experience a wide range of barriers to accessing the housing most suitable to meet their needs. Disability Now’s recent article , When a House is not a Home highlights this issue and features the Accessible Property Register. The deadline for the consultation is the end of January 2012 if you still wish to give a response. You can find out more at www.sheffield.gov.uk/allocationspolicyreview and complete an online survey or email

Access to Sativex Campaign |
One of our members has contacted us regarding the withdrawal of funding for Sativex. Although Sativex has been licensed for the treatment of spasticity in people with MS in the UK, it has not been assessed by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). As a result, decisions about whether to provide the drug have to be made locally by the NHS. Whilst there are fewer policies supporting entitlement to MS drugs not approved by NICE, you can still (and should) make a case for access to this treatment. If you would like to know how to access Sativex please read the following information guide, which includes a simple step-by-step guide on action you can take. Our member Geoff Pick would be interested in hearing from any other members who are trying to access Sativex. Please contact Geoff by e mailing
