Learning Disabilities Communication Awareness Card

People with learning disabilities are getting a huge boost this week to help them communicate more easily when out and about in Sheffield. The 'Help Me Talk To You' card has been developed by the Learning Disabilities Partnership Board, in collaboration with people with learning disabilities, to address the problems that occur when people don't understand how to talk and listen to someone with communication difficulties. Through the ‘My Voice, My Choice’ project, people with learning disabilities described the difficulties they faced when they were out and about in the city, because people didn’t always know how to communicate in the best way.  For example not giving them enough time, giving too much information all at once, talking too fast or using complicated words .One of the ideas from the project was to develop a Communication Awareness Card that people can use to let people know that they have difficulties with communication and to tell people how they can help. If you would like to find out more about the card, how to access further copies of it, or how to create a personalised card, please visit the Signpost Sheffield website. Shops and businesses, transport services, GPs, Citizen’s Advice Bureaus, libraries, the police and city ambassadors have been informed about the card. with the aim to make their communication more effective and less stressful for people with learning disabilities.
