Message from City Wide Care Alarms

City Wide Care Alarms has asked us to distribute an urgent clarification regarding their 6 week free trial offer for Intermediate Care customers leaving hospital or residential care. CWCA offers a six week free trial of the general service, i.e. the dispersed lifeline unit and mobile alarm button which allows people to try out the system, gives them that extra security at a difficult time and helps them to decide whether they want to continue with the service when the six week free trial is finished. Referral for this service has to come from health or social care professionals. In some cases, however, these referrals have also included requests for additional sensors to be included as part of the package. CWCA would like to clarify that the additional sensors cannot be included as part of the free trial. The reason for this is that if additional alarms are requested CWCA staff need to undertake a full assessment to ensure the equipment is appropriate for the needs identified. This is a lot more intensive in terms of staff time and currently this is not included as part of the process. Also whilst the standard lifeline unit and dispersed alarm button can usually be thoroughly cleaned and recycled if it is returned after six weeks, some of the additional alarms cannot easily be reused, resulting in a financial loss. Therefore if a customer wants to have additional alarms, these would have to be included as part of a total package that is assessed and paid for in full. Their latest figures show that of all the people who have taken the six week free trial offer since April last year, over 80% of people decided to keep the service and start paying for it.
