Sheffield’s Health Inequalities Action Plan
Sheffield City Council and NHS Sheffield have unveiled plans to reduce the health inequalities that still exist in the city, through an innovative approach which looks at all aspects of a person's life. Sheffield's 'Health Inequalities Action Plan' builds on national work by Professor Sir Michael Marmot to identify why there are gaps in life expectancy and quality between different communities in society, and what can be done about it. Stark figures which illustrate the gap in health between different communities in the city include: * The difference in life expectancy between different communities in Sheffield is approximately 11 years for men and just over 6 for women * Smoking in pregnancy is strongly related to socio-economic status and the prevalence varies from 0% to 40% across Sheffield neighbourhoods * Employment has direct benefits to health and in Sheffield there are 16,400 Job seeker allowance claimants, 41.2% of whom have been out of work for 6 months or longer.Find out more at: Sheffield NHS
